How do I create subcollections?

Edited

Subcollections, or "collections within collections", let you automatically add prominent links to other related collections at the top of your collection pages.

Your theme will automatically show subcollections whenever the navigation link to your current page has more collections listed within it. In the example below, browsing to the Shop collection would show subcollection links to TopsTunicsDresses, and Sweatshirts.

Note: This feature requires the use of the default 'Main Menu' that was provided by Shopify when you first started your store.

Limitations

There are some limitations you should be aware of to ensure subcollections work correctly in your store.

  1. Multiple URLs in Menus: The subcollections feature is designed to display each collection only once in the navigation menu. If a collection URL appears more than once within the same menu, the subcollections will not display correctly. To avoid this issue, ensure each collection URL is unique within the menu and avoid repeating the same URL in different parts of the menu.

  2. Filters in Collection URLs: When collection URLs include filters, the subcollections might not display as expected. This limitation arises because filtered URLs are treated differently by the theme, which can prevent subcollections from appearing. To ensure subcollections function correctly, use unfiltered collection URLs in your menu.

This feature requires careful planning of your menu structure for it to work effectively.

Alternative method

The method outlined above uses the menu which can be limiting. For more flexibility, you can use the Collection list section. If you want different subcollections (collection lists) in different collections, you can always create a new collection template.
